More than 40 Catholic individuals, dioceses and universities have sued the Obama administration to prevent trampling of their First Amendment right to practice religion by forcing them to pay for abortifacients, sterilizations, contraception, devices and pills that would violate their religious beliefs.

We would be stunned and alarmed if the courts reject their arguments, grounded as they are in the constitutionally protected right to free exercise of religion.

But sadly, it’s unsurprising that President Barack Obama’s administration attempts such abuses. The administration also has distorted the Constitution to presume authority for dictating Americans buy a private insurance policy or pay a fine.
Both these egregious authoritarian mandates stem from the Affordable Care Act, which the administration uses to bludgeon the Constitution. We shudder to think what other constitutional violations lie ahead as the president’s bureaucrats churn out more diktats

under Obamacare, which doesn’t take full force until 2014.

The media shamefully has downplayed the 43 Catholic lawsuits, despite the gravity of the potential infringement of rights.

“If this isn’t ‘news,’ then there’s no such thing as news,” complained Brent Bozell, president of the Media Research Center, an advocacy group that monitors the press for liberal bias. “This is the worst bias by omission I have seen in the quarter century history of the Media Research Center. … They are now withholding news from the American people if it is harmful to the reelection of Barack Obama.”

Indeed, the president’s reelection campaign faces potential damage. We believe it likely the U.S. Supreme Court this year will strike down Obamacare as unconstitutional. Another 43 lawsuits promise to add to the negative fallout.

The administration this year already suffered a 9-0 ruling by the high court slapping down its attempt to dictate employment policies to a Lutheran School. The frightening inclinations of this administration are unmistakable.

“We do not seek to impose our religious beliefs on others,” said Notre Dame University president John Jenkins. “We simply ask that the government not impose its values on the university when those values conflict with our religious teachings.”
